Modelled still-water depth at this exact point during a flood with a 1% chance of happening in any given year. Wave action is not included, and levees or seawalls are not modelled — this is the undefended hazard.
For a buyer: A depth above roughly 0.3 m (1 ft) at the building footprint usually means structural flood damage, not just a wet yard.
The intensity of short, extreme downpours — the driver of flash flooding away from any river. This is a rainfall measure, not modelled inundation: whether it actually floods also depends on paving, slope, soil, and how well the local storm drains are maintained.
For a buyer: High here is a prompt to check the lot’s grading, gutters and any basement, not a prediction that the house floods.
Ground elevation relative to the local average high tide, for land that is hydraulically connected to the ocean. A screen for chronic tidal flooding and sea-level-rise exposure, not a storm-surge simulation.

Every hazard is read at the address point from its own gridded dataset, then converted to a
1–10 score against fixed, nationally consistent breakpoints — so a 7 in Florida means the
same thing as a 7 in Oregon. Scores roll up into categories by their worst member, and the
overall rating is anchored on the hazards that cause direct structural damage (flood, wind,
wildfire, earthquake, tornado); comfort and energy-demand metrics can never drive it on
their own. The underlying data and scoring are shared verbatim with
scores.degreeday.org, so the two sites always agree.
